SCHIP to be Top Priority for Congressional Democrats

CQ Politics reported on Friday, November 6th that the Demcrats in Congress plan to move quickly in the New Year to pass a major expansion of SCHIP, the State Children's Health Insurance Program. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was interviewed on NPR ( National Public Radio) last Wednesday and stated that the expansion of SCHIP " Will probaly be one of the first bills we would put on President Obama's desk."

In 2007 the U.S. Senate and U.S. House passed a $35 billion dollar SCHIP expansion bill twice, but President Bush vetoed two times the legislation and his vetoes were not overridden. The proposed tax increases on cigarettes and tobacco products in two bills that passed were:
